'CITIES SINKING IN DROUGHT', WATER SCARCITY
The competition site, Kampung Kali Bahru, is located on the south west part of Bandarharjo. Bounded by Jalan RE. Martadinata at the north, Jalan Lodan Raya and Kali Semarang, the Semarang River at the west, and Jalan Yos Sudarso and the Kalibaru at the east, the area is particularly vulnerable to various hazards, shocks and stresses related to climate change such as tidal flooding, land subsidence, sea-water incursion and rising sea levels, risks that threaten and take place frequently in the neighborhood.
Competing teams will prepare their design solutions and innovative responses to these complex shock and stress affecting Semarang city community located in Indonesia. More specifically, the teams are to propose alternative and innovative solutions to the challenges of droughts, water scarcity and lack of infrastructure, subsidence and flooding that affect Kampung Kali Bahru.
- Propose solutions for the Heritage. The importance of the identity and heritage elements proposing their integration and rehabilitation and suggesting programs or future uses for the community and/or the city.
- Propose solutions to the increase of density. Increase the density of the existing neighbourhood in order to respond to the expected population growth. The increase of density will take into consideration the existing community and kampung housing and proposal should try to keep the existing as much as possible.
- Provide adequate housing solutions. Investigate solutions for the existing housing stock as well as for the new housing proposals in order to provide better living environments tackling the environmental challenges.
- Propose solutions for a mixed-use neighborhood. Provide a live and work environment where employment opportunities are created and local activities can coexist with city-scale uses. Proposals should explore the role of the neighborhood in the city due to its strategic location and its relationship with the harbour, the proximity to the train station and the city centre, and the very good connectivity of the area with the rest of the city and the airport.
- Propose solutions for a resilient mobility- Provide the area and the city with better solutions to solve the mobility of people in order to increase integration and reduce inequalities.

G.R.A.B. AS INFORMAL INFRASTRUCTURE
According to International Institute for Environment and Development Report in 2013, one of the most significant challenge of contemporary developing urbanization is water shortage which is due to unbalance distribution of the precipitation and the high density of population. This proposal points out the most important challenge is the water shortage in the tropical developing city.
In the global viewpoint, the climate changing leads to the rising of the sea level and it also aggravates the serious flooding occurring in the coastal city. Semarang City has been suffering from the coastal erosion yearly. Because of economic concern, the local government refuses to reinforce the infrastructure in the weakened site.
To find out the fact of the water risk, this project scopes the overview of the water system in the Semarang Area. The strategy is not only recovering the waterfront to the coastline, but also designing from the top-down policies and bottom-up ideas. The main goal is upgrading the water quality and quantity.
Intro
G.R.A.B.( Guard, Recycle, Active, Balance ) is the guideline in this proposal. Looking towards water management as both ecological and economical strategies, G.R.A.B. will utilize the means of managing wasted water, recharging groundwater, making good use of water and prevent the floods.
On the other hand, the site survey discovered the mobile life style nowadays. The "Grab" mobile phone application inspires the concept of individual economics and mobility. The project combines the water selling and resource aquiring with the e-business platform. And that could have the residents free from the barrier to make profit from daily water storage and management.
The project devotes to prompting the water quality. In each key plots of the metropolis, the concept arranges essential strategies so that the coastal downtown could gain the safety water resource. In the educational concern, the residents realize the importance of the whole circulation by approaching the waterscape as a public space.

WATER ZIPPER
Zipping Nature / Social Experience Everyday
The project is located in the double cross of Semarang City which is in the double cross in Indonesia Central Java province. Semarang river, Kali Baru Canal and the ring expressway are the three boundaries of the land. Trapped in many urban problems and environmental problems, there are two issues need to get improved in emergency in this area: water scarcity and land subsidence. Limited by funding shortages, local government block the canal and raise the road once in 30cm again and again to prevent the harmless by the flood. At the same time, people who live here get used to raise their houses by their own efforts and money. This rebuilt cycle of raising road and house have lasted more than 30 years.
Our team propose a Water Zipper Design as a respond. It's a bridging system of land and water for protecting the village, driven by the needs and co-experiences of local communities. Based on the interactive design between land and water, there are four specialized zones. To respond to the needs and wishes of the particular communities concerned, each is a particular solution to the big matter it has. Inspired by the rebuilding cycle they have experienced so many years, our team find the chances from this cycle to reshape their public activity and to improve personal living conditions.
